SEATTLE, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Mike Carp came through with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning Wednesday that rallied the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Felix Hernandez went the distance for the Mariners, allowing a lone base runner over the final five innings. That outstanding performance, however, appeared as if it would come up short due to a solid outing from Dan Haren.
Haren (13-8), gave up just three hits through seven innings, but he put the winning runs on base in the eighth and reliever Scott Downs surrendered the key hit.
Haren retired the first two men in the eighth before giving up a single to Franklin Gutierrez. Dustin Ackley singled Gutierrez to third and Downs came on to replace Haren.
The first batter to face Downs was Carp, who rocketed a 2-1 pitch to deep center for the double that gave the Mariners the comeback win.
Hernandez (13-11) went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out nine. The only run against him came on an RBI single by Howie Kendrick in the third.
It was the fourth complete game of the season for Hernandez and the 18th of his seven-year career.
The Angels missed a chance to close the gap with Texas in the American League West and remained 3 1/2 games behind the division-leading Rangers.
