MLB: Texas 4, Boston 0

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- C.J. Wilson tossed 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball and Mike Napoli hit a three-run homer Monday, powering the Texas Rangers to a 4-0 whitewash of Boston.

Wilson (13-5) surrendered just four hits and two walks and struck out four in the opener of a four-game series between two likely post-season contenders.

Boston's Eric Bedard (4-9) was tagged with the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits over six innings.

The AL wild card-leading Red Sox needed a win to tie the New York Yankees atop the AL East but came up short.
