Family says beaten Giants fan Brian Stow is 'responsive'

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Two men accused of beating a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodgers Stadium on Opening Day pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Marvin Norwood and Louie Sanchez face three felony charges, including mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon, in the March 31 assault that left 42-year-old Bryan Stow of Santa Cruz, Calif., hospitalized in a medically induced coma ever since.

The Los Angeles Times reported Deputy Los Angeles County District Attorney Frank Santoro said incriminating statements allegedly made by Norwood and Sanchez would be used against them.

Police arrested Sanchez and Norwood last month.

Stow was the third Giants fan Sanchez and Norwood attacked at the Opening Day game, prosecutors allege.

The pleas came as Stow's family said he is responding to commands and is moving.

The family said on a Web site they have set up that Stow has been "more alert and responsive as the days go by" since getting a lumbar drain last week.

"Yesterday, we got the most response from Bry to date," they said in a post that was on the Web site Wednesday. "He lifted his left leg slightly when asked, he raised his left arm everytime we asked if we could hold his hand, and the best part? Bonnie asked Bryan if she could have a kiss and every time she asked him, he puckered his lips.

"The final time when she was leaving, Bonnie asked again for a kiss. Bry turned his head towards her, puckered his lips for the kiss, then turned his head back. The nurse was shocked and excited to see that!"

Doctors at the hospital said they were still trying to assess Stow's level of brain damage, the Times reported.
