Police arrest two in beating of Giants fan

LOS ANGELES, July 22 (UPI) -- Two men were arrested in the beating of a San Francisco Giants fan after police determined a man arrested in May wasn't involved, Los Angeles police said.

The names of the suspects and details on the arrests were not released.

It was a dramatic turnaround in the investigation, which attracted international attention, into the vicious beating of Brian Stow, 42, in a Dodger Stadium parking lot after a Dodgers-Giants game.

Police determined that Giovanni Ramirez, 31, is not responsible for the March 31 assault, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The arrests and determination that Ramirez wasn't a suspect raised questions about the police department's investigation and the confidence Police Chief Charlie Beck expressed that Ramirez was the primary attacker, the Times said.

"Obviously, we're going to need to get an explanation," said Matt Szabo, an aide to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Police took Ramirez, a gang member, into custody May 22 after a parole officer intimated he could have been an assailant and witnesses identified him from photo arrays. But the case stalled and Beck reassigned the investigation last month to the department's robbery-homicide division.

It was not immediately known what information led detectives to the new suspects, the Times said.

In June, Ramirez was returned to prison for 10 months after a parole commissioner confirmed that he had had access to a gun, a parole violation.
