Piercy hangs on for Reno-Tahoe victory

RENO, Nev., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Scott Piercy struggled to a 2-under-par 70 Sunday but it was good enough for him to claim the Reno-Tahoe Open by a single stroke over Pat Perez.

Piercy two-putted for par on the final hole to secure his first career PGA Tour victory and qualify for next week's PGA Championship in Atlanta, finishing with a 15-under 273.

The 32-year-old had a tough task on No. 18 after putting his tee shot between a cart path and the accompanying grass. But he was able to get into the fairway and onto the green in three shots, setting up the tournament-winning putts -- the second one a tricky 6-footer.

Perez carded a 4-under 68, ending at 14-under 274, and seemed destined for at least a playoff before stumbling to a bogey at the 17th and putting an approach shot into the bunker on the final hole.

Tied for third at minus-13 were Steve Flesch (68) and Blake Adams (69), while Jim Renner (68) took claimed fifth at minus-12.
