MLB: Milwaukee 6, St. Louis 2

MILWAUKEE, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Nyjer Morgan stroked a go-ahead, bases-clearing double during a big fifth inning Monday that carried the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 victory over St. Louis.

With the Brewers trailing 2-0, Yuniesky Betancourt, Casey McGehee, Jonathan Lucroy, Zack Greinke and Corey Hart all hit consecutive one-out singles to tie the score.

Morgan then followed by slicing a 1-1 pitch into the left-center field gap, chasing home three runners to hand Milwaukee the lead.

Greinke (9-4) surrendered just two runs on seven hits over six frames for the Brewers, who won the first contest of a three-game series with St. Louis and boosted their lead over the second-place Cardinals to 3 1/2 games in the National League Central.

Chris Carpenter (6-6) was tagged with the loss, coughing up five runs on seven hits before exiting after five frames.

Matt Holliday provided a two-run homer for St. Louis.
