COLLEGE PARK, Md., July 28 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Shahar Peer advanced to the quarterfinals of a tournament for the third time this year Thursday with a win at the Citi Open.
Peer defeated Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Alberta Brianti, the eighth seed. Brianti coasted by Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 6-2.
Peer was made the top seed in this event despite the fact she had lost in the opening round of her last four tournaments -- including the French Open and Wimbledon. She has not earned a semifinal berth all season.
In the other second-round matches played Thursday, third-seeded Tamira Paszek won over Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-1 and Stephanie Dubois defeated Heather Watson 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Paszek and Dubois will meet Friday in the quarterfinals. Virginie Razzano will play Irina Falconi and second-seeded Nadia Petrova will take on Bojana Jovanovski in the other quarterfinal matches.
