Patriots lead way in busy trading day

FOXBOROUGH, Mass., July 28 (UPI) -- The New England Patriots acquired defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth and wide receiver Chad Ochocinco Thursday during a hectic day of NFL trading.

A four-month lockout imposed by NFL owners created a moratorium on roster moves, but with labor peace having been achieved there has been a lot of catching up to do among the league's 32 teams.

The Patriots were in the middle of the activity Thursday, obtaining Haynesworth from Washington and Ochocinco from Cincinnati.

Philadelphia quarterback Kevin Kolb, New Orleans running back Reggie Bush and Washington quarterback Donovan McNabb were also dealt Thursday to highlight a frantic round of action. Tennessee released quarterback Vince Young, leaving a player once seemingly headed for superstar status without a job.

New England reportedly sent a fifth-round 2013 draft pick to Washington in exchange for Haynesworth, who fell out of favor with Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan.

The Patriots then gave up late-round draft picks in both 2012 and 2013 to get Ochocinco, another flamboyant player whose attention-grabbing career has included changing his name to his jersey number.

Kolb, who was originally expected to replace McNabb as the quarterback of the future in Philadelphia, was sent to Arizona by the Eagles in exchange for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick next year.

"I'll be pulling for him," Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid said in announcing the trade. "I think he deserves this opportunity."

Bush, the second player chosen in the 2006 draft, agreed to a two-year deal with Miami after the Dolphins worked out a trade with New Orleans. The Miami Herald reported Bush, who played in only eight games last season, would make close to $9.75 million during those two years.

McNabb, who led Philadelphia to four NFC Championship games in a row before spending a wasted 2010 in Washington, was sent to Minnesota for two sixth-round draft choices.

Young spent five seasons with Tennessee before losing his starting job. He joined fellow quarterback Jake Delhomme on the out-of-work list after Delhomme was released by Cleveland.
