SURREY, England, July 21 (UPI) -- Mark Calcavecchia's bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 has him tied with two other players for the lead after Thursday's first round of the British Senior Open.
Calcavecchia's consistent play put him in first along with Mike Harwood, whose round included three bogeys, and Mark McNulty, who had a bogey on the 18th hole Thursday.
David Frost and Albert McKenzie are tied for fourth at 3-under. Defending champion Bernhard Langer leads a group of seven golfers at 2-under 70.
Calcavecchia had birdies at the second and eighth holes and moved in front with birdies at 11 and 13 before heading home with five consecutive pars.
Harwood jumped out with four birdies in his first six holes but had a bogey at the seventh hole. Back-to-back birdies at 10 and 11 and another at 14 had Harwood at 6-under before bogeys at 16 and 17 pulled him back.
McNulty became a factor with three straight birdies at Nos. 4-6. He also had a birdie at the 11th hole and had a 2 at the par-3 17th. However, a bogey at the 404-yard, par-4 18th hole left him in a tie for the lead.
