MLB: Detroit 5, Los Angeles Angels 4

ANAHEIM, Calif., July 6 (UPI) -- Miguel Cabrera blasted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the seventh inning Wednesday, boosting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Tigers trailed 3-2 entering the seventh but then struck for three runs and then held on for a win, avoiding a three-game sweep at the hands of the Angels.

Austin Jackson drew a leadoff walk from Hisanori Takahashi (2-2) and went to second on an Andy Dirks sacrifice. Michael Kohn came in to pitch and Cabrera greeted him with a two-run shot, handing the lead to Detroit.

Victor Martinez contributed a two-run single and Ramon Santiago added a pair of hits for the Tigers.

Brad Penny (6-6) posted his first win since June 5, giving up four runs on six hits over a 6 1/3-inning start. Jose Valverde claimed his 21st save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Mark Trumbo socked a bases-empty homer and Howie Kendrick added a two-run single for Los Angeles.
