MLB: San Francisco 4, Detroit 3

DETROIT, July 1 (UPI) -- Nate Schierholtz and Brandon Crawford drew bases-loaded walks in the ninth Friday and San Francisco survived a hectic final inning to defeat Detroit 4-3.

It was a 1-1 game heading into the ninth, during which the teams combined to send 16 men to the plate.

After San Francisco scored three times in the top of the inning, Detroit battled back with two runs off closer Brian Wilson, who also allowed a tying run in the eighth and blew his fourth save of the season.

Jeremy Affeldt came on to replace Wilson in the ninth and faced a bases-loaded, one-out jam. He escaped, however, by getting Brennan Boesch on a line drive to shortstop that was turned into a game-ending double play.

Chris Stewart doubled for the Giants to open the ninth against Jose Valverde (2-3) and Aaron Rowand singled Stewart to third. Pablo Sandoval drove in Stewart with a ground-rule double and Aubrey Huff was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Schierholtz and Crawford then both worked a walk to force in two runs.

Despite losing the lead in the eighth, Wilson (6-1) got the victory. Affeldt picked up his third save.
