PHILADELPHIA, July 1 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers signed former NHL superstar Jaromir Jagr to a one-year contract Friday, reported to be worth $3.3 million.

The acquisition of Jagr coincided with the opening day of hockey's free-agent signing period and teams around the league reported more than 60 such signings.

Jagr, 39, has 646 career goals and 1,599 points in 1,273 games, but left North America three seasons ago and has played in Russia since then. Philadelphia became the only serious bidder for his services after Pittsburgh withdrew a $2 million deal it had proposed.

Jagr's previous NHL stop had been with the New York Rangers, for whom he scored 25 goals in 2007-08. He was selected fifth overall in the 1990 draft by Pittsburgh and played his first 11 seasons with the Penguins.

His best season came in 1995-96, during which he scored 62 goals with 149 points in 82 games.

Among the free-agent activity Friday was the signing of veteran goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere by Colorado. Giguere was in goal for Anaheim's march to the Stanley Cup title in 2007. He has won 231 games with 34 career shutouts for four teams -- most recently Toronto.

Other goaltenders changing teams included Jose Theodore (who moved from Minnesota to Florida), Mike Smith (from Tampa Bay to Phoenix) and Brian Boucher (from Philadelphia to Carolina).
