Djokovic, Federer win first-round matches

LONDON, June 21 (UPI) -- Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer each won in straight sets Tuesday and moved into the second round of the Wimbledon Championships.

Federer, seeded third, is the only player to have beaten Djokovic, ranked No. 2 in the world, this year, having won when they played at the French Open semifinals. If the draw plays out, Djokovic and Federer would be semifinal opponents again at Wimbledon.

Both took steps in that direction Tuesday. Djokovic rolled past Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in 80 minutes. Djokovic had just six unforced errors and faced one break point in winning 82 percent of the points on serve.

Federer took 85 percent of the points when serving in a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-2 win over Mikhail Kukushkin. Federer won points on 30 of his 32 serves in the first set and piled up 53 winners.

The first-round rematch from last year's record-long battle between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut went to Isner in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Last year, they played five sets with the final one won by Isner 70-68.

Results involving other highly seeded players included No. 5-seed Robin Soderling getting past Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5); seventh-seeded David Ferrer defeating Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-4, 6-4; No. 8-seeded Andy Roddick advancing with a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Andreas Beck and 11th-seeded Jurgen Melzer winning 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-2 over Alejandro Falla.

Also, 12th-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Go Soeda 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; No. 13-seeded Viktor Troicki rallied to defeat Maximo Gonzalez 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3; 15th-seeded Gilles Simon got by Edouard Roger-Vasselin 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3); and No. 16 Nicolas Almagro stopped Jarkko Nieminen 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Fernando Gonzalez ousted 22nd-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Also, Ivo Karlovic advanced when 23rd-seeded Janko Tipsarevic, who was down 7-5, 3-1, retired and Ivan Ljubicic ousted 27th-seeded Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 while Bernard Tomic eliminated No. 29 Nikolay Davydenko in the day's upsets.

Other seeded winners Tuesday included 18th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, No. 19 Michael Llodra, 20th-seeded Florian Mayer, No. 21 Fernando Verdasco; 24th-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, No. 25 Juan Ignacio Chela, 26th-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, No. 28-seeded David Nalbandian and No. 32 Marcos Baghdatis.

Unseeded players headed to the second round include Tobias Kamke, Xavier Malisse, Andreas Haider-Maurer, Ricardo Mello, Olivier Rochus, Somdev Devvarman, Victor Hanescu, Ryan Harrison, Rik de Voest, Karol Beck, Andreas Seppi, Lleyton Hewitt, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Lukasz Kubot, Igor Andreev, Adrian Mannarino, Robin Haase and Lu Yen-hsun.
