Zions takes over Saint-Omer lead

LUMBRES, France, June 18 (UPI) -- Matt Zions, despite high winds and heavy rain, shot a 4-under-par 67 Saturday and bolted into the lead of the European Tour's Saint-Omer Open in France.

Zions closed with a pair of birdies that pushed his lead to three strokes. He's at 6-under 207 for the tournament.

Daniel Denison matched Zions' 67 and is second, tied with Federico Colombo, who had an even-par 71 Saturday, and first-round leader George Coetzee, who shot 1-over 72 in the third round.

Second-round co-leader Craig Lee opened the day with three bogeys and finished with a 3-over 74 and its tied with Simon Thornton (67 Saturday) for fourth at 2-under 211. Only three other golfers are under par for the wind-plagued tournament.

"It was fantastic," Zions said. "It's so windy out there that it's borderline not being able to play. But I hit it great and putted amazingly. Everyone's going to make bogeys, you have to accept that. You just have to give yourself a chance to make par and avoid any big numbers."

Zions was 1-over after bogeys at 6 and 8 and a birdie at No. 7 before he linked together four straight birdies. He gave back on stroke at the 16th -- where he'd had a double bogey Friday -- before closing with birdied at 17 and 18.
