All but one of the runs in the game came on homers. A two-run blast by Victor Martinez in the fourth gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.

Seattle tied it in the fifth on an RBI single from Chris Gimenez and the Mariners took the lead on Peguero's leadoff home run in the seventh off Brad Penny (5-5).

Chris Ray (3-1), who worked two perfect innings in relief of Erik Bedard, was credited with the win. Brandon League gave up a two-out, infield single in the ninth before collecting his 18th save.

Justin Smoak hit a solo homer for Seattle in the first, his 11th home run of the year.
