HALLE, Germany, June 8 (UPI) -- Tomas Berdych claimed a straight-set, but lengthy, second-round victory Wednesday at the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament in Germany.

Berdych, seeded second, defeated Jan Hernych 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in a match that took 1 hour, 47 minutes. Berdych lost his serve only once but had to save six other break points.

He was also just 2-of-10 in converting his break-point opportunities.

Berdych is to face fifth-seeded Viktor Troicki in Friday's quarterfinals. Troicki was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Igor Andreev in his second-round match. He had five breaks in eight Andreev service games.

The other quarterfinal set Wednesday sends eighth-seeded Milos Raonic against Philipp Petzschner. Raonic was a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 winner over Tobias Kamke and Petzschner stopped Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-4.

Tournament defending champion Lleyton Hewitt beat Leonard Mayer 6-2, 6-3 in a first-round match. Mayer was a substitute for Roger Federer, who cited a groin injury as he withdrew from the Gerry Weber after a finals appearance Sunday at the French Open. Federer, who lost the 2010 Weber final to Hewitt, has won the event five times.
