MLB: Seattle 7, Tampa Bay 0

SEATTLE, June 4 (UPI) -- Jason Vargas threw a four-hit shutout Friday and was supported by three home runs in leading the Seattle Mariners to a 7-0 blanking of Tampa Bay.

Vargas (4-3) posted his first shutout in 77 career starts over six major league season. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Vargas put two runners on with one out in the ninth, but was allowed to finish the game. He got Evan Longoria on a fly ball to right and Matt Joyce on a grounder to first to complete the dominating effort.

Justin Smoak hit a solo homer in the first and his bases-loaded walk drove in the first of Seattle's three runs in the third.

Adam Kennedy hit a two-run blast in the fifth and Miguel Olivo had a solo shot later in the inning to conclude the scoring.

Andy Sonnanstine (0-2) walked five, gave up four hits and allowed seven runs in five innings to take the loss.

Tampa Bay has lost three straight.
