SAN DIEGO, May 25 (UPI) -- Chase Headley's two-out RBI double in the eighth inning Wednesday broke a 1-1 tie and sparked the San Diego Padres to a 3-1 win over St. Louis.
Jason Bartlett reached on a bunt single after Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter (1-5) had recorded two outs in the eighth. Headley then lashed a 2-2 pitch into the left-field corner, scoring Bartlett and advancing to third on Tyler Greene's throwing error.
The Padres added an insurance run when Headley scored on Ryan Ludwick's infield single.
Brad Hawpe added a solo homer for San Diego, which avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of St. Louis.
Mat Latos (2-6) notched the victory, yielding one run on six hits over eight innings while walking none and striking out seven. Heath Bell tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 10th save.
Carpenter (1-5) absorbed the complete-game loss for the Cards, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, issuing no walks while fanning six.
