MLB: Los Angeles Angels 4, Oakland 1

ANAHEIM, Calif., May 24 (UPI) -- Torii Hunter's RBI double triggered a three-run eighth inning Monday that carried the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-1 victory over Oakland.

Athletics reliever Brian Fuentes (1-7) started the eighth by issuing a walk to Erick Aybar, who was forced at second on Bobby Abreu's groundout. Michael Wuertz came in to pitch and, after Abreu stole second, Hunter blasted a 2-2 pitch into the right-center field gap to break a 1-1 tie.

Jeff Mathis added a two-run single later in the inning for the Angels.

Scott Downs (2-1) was credited with the win thanks to a scoreless top of the eighth, and Jordan Walden earned his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Los Angeles starter Jered Weaver allowed one run on six hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out five.

Josh Outman made the start for the A's after being called up from Class AAA Sacramento -- his first major-league appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2009.

The left-hander held the Angels to one run on five hits over seven innings.
