Djokovic, Federer win French 1st-rounders

PARIS, May 23 (UPI) -- Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer opened their French Open draws with straight-set victories Monday.

Djokovic, ranked No. 2 in the world, ran his 2001 record to 38-0 with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 win over Thiemo De Bakker. Djokovic dropped only 10 points over 12 service games. He faced one break point -- saving it -- and cashed in 6-of-16 break-point opportunities.

Federer, No. 3 in the world, had only a little more trouble before advancing with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) decision over Feliciano Lopez. Federer didn't face a break point and won a healthy 76 percent of the points on serve.

Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych blew a two-set lead and was ousted by Stephane Robert 3-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 9-7. Each player won 53 points in the fifth set but Robert managed two breaks to finish the upset.

Steve Darcis pulled off a minor upset, knocking out No. 22 Michael Llodra 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3; and Michael Berrer knocked out 26th-seeded Milos Raonic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Other seeded No. 9-Gael Monfils rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-0 win over Bjorn Phau; 10th-seeded Mardy Fish edged Ricardo Mello 6-2, 6-7 (11-13), 6-2, 6-4; No. 12-seeded Mikhail Youzhny defeated Go Soeda 7-5, 6-2, 6-4; 13th-seeded Richard Gasquet stopped Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-3, 6-0; and 15th-seeded Viktor Troicki swept past Julian Reister 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Other first-round seeded winners Monday were 23rd-seeded Thomaz Bellucci, No. 25 Juan Martin del Potro, 27th-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, 28th-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and No. 29 Janko Tipsarevic.

Unseeded winners Monday were Igor Andreev, Thomas Schoorel, Philipp Petzschner, Alejandro Falla, Carlos Berlocq, Mikhail Kukushkin, Albert Ramos, Simone Bolelli, Tobias Kamke, Marsel Ilhan, Victor Hanescu, Leonard Mayer, Albert Ramos Antonio Veic, and Marcel Granollers.
