Pettersen bests Kerr for match play title

GLADSTONE, N.J., May 22 (UPI) -- Suzann Pettersen overcame illness to earn her seventh LPGA title Sunday with a 1-up win over Cristie Kerr in the Sybase Match Play Championship.

The fifth-seeded Pettersen, whose stamina was tested after battling the flu all week, won her first crown since she took the Canadian Women's Open in late 2009.

Pettersen never trailed in the title match and capitalized on some poor putting by the third-seeded Kerr, who botched several chances to win and halve holes Sunday.

Kerr, for instance, could have won the 11th hole with a putt from only a few feet but she missed badly, allowing Pettersen to stay ahead. Kerr also missed an 8-footer on No. 13 that again would have squared the match.

The victory was especially sweet for Pettersen after she became the highest seeded player to lose in the first round of last year's match play event.
