MLB: Tampa Bay 4, Florida 0

MIAMI, May 22 (UPI) -- James Shields struck out 13 batters en route to a three-hit shutout Sunday and the Tampa Bay Rays breezed to a 4-0 whitewash of Florida.

Shields (5-2) issued only one walk in the 126-pitch gem and won for the third time in four starts, lowering his ERA to 2.00. The right-hander didn't allow a Marlin to reach second base until the ninth inning.

Shields also drove in a first-inning run and Casey Kotchman delivered an RBI triple among his two hits for the Rays, who salvaged one victory in their three-game interleague series with Florida.

Jay Buente (0-1) was called up from Class AAA New Orleans to make an emergency start for injured Marlins ace Josh Johnson. He was touched for four runs (three earned) on five hits over three innings, absorbing his first major-league loss.
