Hoey claims two-shot Madeira triumph

MADEIRA, Portugal, May 22 (UPI) -- Michael Hoey earned his second career European Tour win Sunday, hanging on to the top spot of the Madeira Islands Open despite carding a 1-under-par 71.

The performance was good enough for a 10-under 278, two shots better than third-round co-leader Jamie Elson -- who stumbled to a 1 over 73 in the final round -- as well as Chris Gane (71) at minus-8.

Hoey dropped a stroke with a bogey on the 13th but came right back with a birdie on 14 and parred the last four holes to seal the win at Porto Santo Golfe Club.

Elson fell out of contention when he slid to minus-7 thanks to bogeys on the fifth and seventh holes.

Tied for fourth at minus-6 were Federico Colombo (67), Jose-Filipe Lima (68) and Lloyd Saltman (70).
