MADEIRA, Portugal, May 19 (UPI) -- Chris Gane survived windy conditions Thursday to shoot a 5-under 67 that put him a shot in front after one round of the Madeira Islands Open.
Gane ran off three straight birdies beginning at the 14th to give himself a chance to win his first European Tour title.

Francois Delamontagne and Lloyd Saltman were tied for second at 68.
Three-time European Tour champion Joakim Haeggman posted a 70 at the Porto Santo Golf Club to share fourth place with Emanuel Canonica, Fredrik Henge, Manuel Quiros, Jose-Filipe Lima and Federico Colombo.
Defending champion James Morrison had a 73 and was tied for 35th.
