MADEIRA, Portugal, May 20 (UPI) -- Simon Thornton shot a 6-under 66 Friday that jumped him into first place after two rounds of the Madeira Islands Open.
Thornton earned the first 36-hole lead of his European Tour career with a total of 7-under 137.

Francois Delamontagne was alone in second at 138 after firing a 70 at the Porto Santo Golf Club.
Chris Gane, who held the first-round lead, fell into a tie for third at 139 after shooting an even-par 72. Jamie Elson was also at 139 following a 68.
Thornton's round was highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 third hole. He is looking for his first European Tour victory.
