ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 16 (UPI) -- B.J. Upton's go-ahead solo homer capped a five-run, sixth-inning rally Monday that carried the Tampa Bay Rays to a 6-5 win over the New York Yankees.
Tampa Bay came into the frame trailing 5-1 but scored five runs to overcome New York and lengthen their lead over the slumping Yankees to three games in the American League East.
Sam Fuld started the rally with a two-run homer and Matt Joyce's RBI single tied the score. Joyce then came home on Upton's blast to left field to chase Yankees starter A.J. Burnett (4-3).
Juan Cruz (2-0) picked up the win with a scoreless top of the sixth inning and Kyle Farnsworth racked up his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Burnett surrendered six runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 frames for New York, which lost its sixth straight and 10th in 13 games.
Curtis Granderson cracked a three-run homer and Eduardo Nunez drove in a pair of runs for the Yanks.
