KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 6 (UPI) -- Gio Gonzalez allowed two early runs Friday and then shut down Kansas City in a seven-inning effort while the Oakland A's were rallying past the Royals 3-2.
Gonzalez (4-2) helped the A's win for the sixth time in nine games, giving up four hits and striking out six.
Oakland overcame a two-run deficit with a three-run fifth against starter and loser Sean O'Sullivan (1-2).
Consecutive singles to start the inning by Kurt Suzuki, Ryan Sweeney and Adam LaRoche accounted for a run and Mark Ellis delivered another base hit that loaded the bases.
Kevin Kouzmanoff and Coco Crisp then drove in a run each on a pair of fielder's choice grounders to complete the scoring.
Brian Fuentes worked the ninth for his eighth save. Fuentes allowed a two-out single to Wilson Betemit and pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson stole second.
With the potential tying run on second, Fuentes got Matt Treanor to groundout to third to end the game.
