Monfils in, Fish out in Madrid 1st round

MADRID, May 2 (UPI) -- Ninth-seeded Gael Monfils of France advanced but No. 11 American Mardy Fish fell in an upset Monday in first-round action at the Madrid Open.

Monfils moved on with a straight-set 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory over 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic. Fish was victimized by fellow American John Isner, who posted a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Another American, 12th-seeded Andy Roddick, also endured a somewhat surprising loss when he was upended by Italian qualifier Flavio Cipolla 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 on the red clay of the Magic Box in Madrid.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Michael Llodra had little trouble with American Sam Querrey, winning 6-2, 6-3, and Dutch qualifier Thiemo de Bakker prevailed over Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, Belgian Xavier Malisse, Pere Riba of Spain, French qualifier Adrian Mannarino, Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine and Croat Marin Cilic also notched first-round wins Monday.
