Almagro, Wawrinka fall in Madrid upsets

MADRID, May 1 (UPI) -- Seeded players Nicolas Almagro of Spain and Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka were ousted in upsets Sunday on the first day of the Madrid Open.

The 10th-seeded Almagro fell to France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-3, who fired eight aces en route to the victory on the red clay at the Magic Box.

Fourteenth-seeded Wawrinka, meanwhile, lasted 3 hours before succumbing to Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

In other Day 1 action, Colombian Santiago Giraldo downed Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-1, 7-5, and Argentina's Juan Monaco rallied to defeat Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal holds the top seed in Madrid. He is the defending champion after defeated Roger Federer in last year's final.
