MLB: San Fran. 3, Pittsburgh 2 (10 inn.)

PITTSBURGH, April 26 (UPI) -- Darren Ford raced home from third on Freddy Sanchez's groundout in the 10th inning Tuesday, handing the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 decision over Pittsburgh.

Ford had reached third after grounding into a fielder's choice and moving up two bases on a throwing error by Pirates pitcher Joel Hanrahan (0-1). With the infield playing in, Sanchez then hit a routine grounder to second baseman Neil Walker, who tossed him out at first.

But Ford unexpectedly took off for home and beat first baseman Lyle Overbay's wild throw to the plate, sparking the Giants to a win in the first of a three-game series against the Bucs.

Sergio Romo (1-0) collected the victory for tossing a scoreless ninth inning and Brian Wilson picked up his sixth save in the 10th.

Pirates starter Charlie Morton limited the Giants to one run on four hits over six innings, but Evan Meek allowed San Francisco to tie it with a run in the eighth.

Garrett Jones hit a solo homer for the Pirates.
