Snedeker costs Donald No. 1 ranking

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., April 24 (UPI) -- Brandt Snedeker bested Luke Donald on their third playoff hole Sunday to win The Heritage tournament, costing Donald a world No. 1 ranking.

Snedeker's par on the final playoff hole stood up for his second PGA Tour win when Donald's chip shot lipped out of the hole.

Donald was in line to take over the world's top ranking had he hung on for the victory. Instead, it will be Lee Westwood who supplants Martin Kaymer as No. 1 after winning in Indonesia Sunday.

Snedeker fired a 7-under-par 64 then had to wait for over an hour for the playoff to begin. Donald, who led after three rounds, carded a 1-under 70 to tie Snedeker at 12-under 272.

Tommy Gainey finished third, one shot back at minus-11 after shooting a 3-under 68.

Knotted for fourth at minus-10 were Tim Herron (67) and Ricky Barnes (69).
