Reliever Brett Tomko, however, surrendered a three-run homer to Mike Aviles, enabling the Royals to pull within a run in the ninth. Arthur Rhodes spelled Tomko and retired Melky Cabrera on a grounder to end the game and pick up his first save.

Aviles went 3-for-5 with four RBI for Kansas City.

Royals starter Bruce Chen (3-1) absorbed his first loss of the year, surrendering six runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.
