MLB: Boston 4, LA Angels 2 (11 inn.)

ANAHEIM, Calif., April 22 (UPI) -- Adrian Gonzalez doubled in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning Thursday and the Boston Red Sox went on to cool off the Los Angeles Angels 4-2.

The Angels lost for just the second time in eight games. Boston has begun to overcome its poor start by winning five times in six contests.

Boston starter Josh Beckett had a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh before giving up a two-run homer to Torii Hunter. Beckett eventually allowed three hits over eight innings while throwing 125 pitches.

Rich Thompson (0-1) was on the mound for the Angels to start the 11th and he gave up a leadoff walk to J.D. Drew. Dustin Pedroia failed to get down a sacrifice bunt, but wound up delivering a single that moved Drew to third.

Gonzalez then came through with his double that scored Drew and Pedroia later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jed Lowrie.

That made a winner out of Bobby Jenks (1-1), who worked a perfect 10th inning. With a runner on second base, Jonathan Papelbon struck out Howie Kendrick at the end of a 10-pitch at-bat to end the game and collect his fourth save.
