All the home runs came off Cubs' starter James Russell (1-2), who allowed seven hits without a strikeout over four innings to take the loss.

The game-winning run came on a sacrifice fly by Alberto Gonzalez that gave the Padres a 5-2 lead in the sixth. Alfonso Soriano delivered a two-run homer for the Cubs in the eighth but Heath Bell worked around a single in the ninth to pick up his fifth save.

San Diego's Aaron Harang (4-0) stayed unbeaten despite giving up nine hits in six innings. He allowed only two runs with five strikeouts.
