Carl Lewis urged to run for N.J. Senate

MEDFORD, N.J., April 9 (UPI) -- New Jersey politicians say they want Olympic track legend Carl Lewis to enter a different kind of race and run for the state Senate.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said Saturday Democratic leaders are urging Lewis to challenge Republican state Sen. Marie Addiego in his home district of Burlington County.

"There are ongoing negotiations with regard to his consideration of him running for the Senate in the Eighth District," said Assemblyman Herb Conaway. "There's no indication that he has made a definite decision to run."

Lewis, 50, a 10-time Olympic medalist, has been working as an actor and charity fundraiser since retiring from track in 1996. He lives in Medford.

The newspaper said if Lewis wants to enter the race he would have to file a nominating petition Monday.
