OAKLAND, Calif., April 3 (UPI) -- Ichiro Suzuki drove in the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning single Saturday, breaking a franchise hits record in Seattle's 5-2 victory over Oakland.
The run-scoring infield hit drove in Jack Wilson and put Seattle up 3-2. It also gave Ichiro 2,248 career hits -- all the with the Mariners -- surpassing the team record of 2,247 held by Edgar Martinez.
The Mariners used a ninth-inning error by Oakland first baseman Daric Barton and a wild pitch by Brian Fuentes (0-1) to push across two more runs in the final frame.
Jason Vargas pitched well for Seattle, allowing only one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings, but Chris Ray (1-0) got the win despite blowing a save in the eighth inning.
Barton went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the A's, who fell to 0-2 to start the season.
