MLB: Oakland 7, Seattle 1

OAKLAND, Calif., April 3 (UPI) -- Gio Gonzalez held Seattle to one run over seven innings and the Oakland Athletics logged their first win on the year, 7-1 over the Mariners.

Gonzalez (1-0) limited Seattle to six hits while walking four and striking out four. That let the Athletics avoid a three-game sweep to start the season.

Oakland hadn't begun a new season with an 0-3 mark since 1996.

Mark Ellis drove in three runs with a groundout, a single and a bases loaded walk, and Coco Crisp went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the A's.

Doug Fister (0-1) absorbed the loss, yielding three runs (two earned) on eight hits through 5 2/3 innings for the Mariners.
