ATLANTA, March 12 (UPI) -- Paul Hewitt confirmed Saturday he was being fired as head men's basketball coach at Georgia Tech.

"I am no longer the coach at Georgia Tech," Hewitt told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"I feel very fortunate to have 11 years at Georgia Tech. They've been more than fair to me and my family. I wish them all the best."

Hewitt went 13-18 this season and had a 190-162 career mark that included five NCAA tournament appearances.

The university will conduct a national search for a new coach.

"Today we will begin a quest to re-engage our fan base and set about to bring new energy and enthusiasm to Georgia Tech basketball," Athletic Director Dan Radakovich said in a written statement.

The newspaper said Hewitt's teams tended to struggle in Atlantic Coast Conference play with just one winning season in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets lost in the first round of this year's conference tournament.

In addition, attendance has been on the decline at Georgia Tech along with the program's revenues.
