Kaymer advances, grabs world top spot

MARANA, Ariz., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Martin Kaymer won his semifinal match at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship Saturday and gained the world No. 1 spot in the process.

The German, who holds the top seed of the Gary Player bracket at the WGC, supplanted Lee Westwood as the world's top-ranked golfer thanks to his 1-up defeat of Bubba Watson Saturday.

Kaymer now advances to play England's Luke Donald in Sunday's final at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Arizona.

Donald, seeded third in the Bobby Jones bracket, moved on to the championship with a one-sided 6 & 5 defeat of Matt Kuchar in the day's other semifinal."

Kaymer thus joined Bernhard Langer as the only Germans ever to attain the world No. 1 ranking.

Donald, meanwhile, will have a chance to move up to world No. 3 if he can defeat Kaymer in Sunday's final.
