Berdych, Melzer lose French quarterfinals

MARSEILLE, France, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Top-four seeds Tomas Berdych and Jurgen Melzer were ousted Friday during the quarterfinals of the Open 13 tennis tournament in France.

Berdych, seeded second, was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Marin Cilic -- the first time in three career meetings Cilic beat Berdych. He pulled off the upset by wining 78 percent of the points on serve and saving the lone break point he faced.

Dmitry Tursunov overcame the fourth-seeded Melzer 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 behind a pair of third-set breaks and losing only four points while serving in the decisive set.

Tursunov advancing to Saturday's semifinals and a date with No. 1-seeded Robin Soderling, who took out eighth-seeded Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-4. Soderling fired 13 aces Friday and fought off all five break-point chances for Llodra.

No. 3-seeded Mikhail Youzhny needed nearly 2 hours to get past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. He had only two breaks but each won him a set. Youzhny draws Cilic in his semifinal.
