Melzer, Tsonga make Open 13 quarterfinals

MARSEILLE, France, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Jurgen Melzer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the quarterfinals of the Open 13 tennis tournament in France with victories Wednesday.

Melzer, seeded fourth, beat Andreas Seppi 7-5, 6-3 mainly because he was able to save six of seven break-point situations. Melzer claimed a pair of breaks in each set in moving to the tournament quarterfinals.

Tsonga, seeded sixth, won 74 percent of the points in serve in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky. Tsonga faced one break point -- losing it -- on the day but lost only 10 points on serve over the second and third sets.

Fifth-seeded Ivan Ljubicic claimed a first-round win, losing just 11 points in nine service games while beating Andrey Golubev 6-2, 6-4.

Philipp Petzschner ousted seventh-seeded Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 in his first-round match.

Also in the first round Wednesday Gilles Simon defeated Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 and qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin topped Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-2.
