Soderling has solid first-round win

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Defending champion Robin Soderling sailed into the second round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in the Netherlands with a straight-set win Tuesday.

Soderling, the No. 1 seed in Rotterdam, lost only six points on serve in a 6-3, 6-2 rout of Robin Haase. The match took just 53 minutes. Soderling didn't face a break point and was able to convert three of his 10 break opportunities against Haase.

No. 3-seeded David Ferrer was ousted by Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-4. Nieminen had a pair of service breaks in each set.

Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych capped Tuesday's seven-match schedule with a 6-1, 6-2 rout of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Berdych won the first five games of the match and used another five-game win streak to finish off the first set and build a 4-0 lead in the second.

No. 7-seeded Ivan Ljubicic defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga topped Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4 without having to deal with a break point.

Also Tuesday, Philipp Kohlschreiber beat Lu Yen-Hsun 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Thiemo de Bakker advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 decision over Philipp Petzschner.
