Cilic, the No. 1 seed and who lives in Zagreb, lost his serve just once in a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory over Igor Kunitsyn. He landed just 35 percent of his first serves in the second set but still won 70 percent of the points on serve.

Third-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez won more the half the points when receiving in a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over Lukas Lacko, while No. 5-seeded Florida Mayer topped Radek Stepanek 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 without dropping serve, and eighth-seeded Michael Berrer, a finalist in Zagreb last year, defeated Blaz Kavcic 6-4, 6-1.

Cilic's quarterfinal opponent will be Mayer. The other quarterfinal pairings won't be set until Thursday's four second-round match results are known.
