Nadal, Soderling, Murray win in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal overcame a second-set setback Saturday and won his third-round match in straight sets at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Nadal defeated home-standing Bernard Tomic 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 coming back from a 0-4 deficit in the second set.

Nadal broke Tomic's serve in the match's third game and again in the seventh in winning the first set. Tomic built a 4-0 lead in the second set behind his only two breaks in the match but Nadal won six of the next seven games to take the set.

He posted a first-game break in the third set and fought off four break points before finishing off the match with his seventh service break.

Fourth-seeded Robin Soderling faced only three break points in a 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jan Hernych and fifth-seeded Andy Murray was very impressive in a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 romp over No. 32-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Murray piled up eight service breaks in the win.

No. 7-seeded David Ferrer had just 15 unforced errors as he ran past Richard Berankis 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Milos Raonic beat 10th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and Alexandr Dolgopolov wore down No. 13 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory. Youzhny and Tsonga joined No. 12 Gael Monfils and 16th-seeded Mardy Fish as the only Top 16 seeds not to make the men's fourth round.

Also Saturday,11th-seeded Jurgen Melzer advanced when No. 21 Marcos Baghdatis suffered a hand injury and retired with Melzer ahead 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2, 4-3; and No. 15 Marin Cilic came out on top of a 4 1/2-hour 4-6, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 9-7 battle with John Isner.

The fourth round of Nadal's half of the men's bracket has Nadal going against Cilic while Ferrer meets Raonic. Soderling is to play Dolgopolov and Murray draws Melzer for their next matches.
