Federer, Djokovic claim wins in Australia

MELBOURNE, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Roger Federer and No. 3 Novak Djokovic lost only 10 games between them in straight-set opening-day wins Monday at the Australian Open.

Federer, who has won the event four times, including in 2010, took nearly two-thirds of the points in a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lukas Lacko. He needed only 51 minutes to build a two-set lead. The game he lost in the second set came on the lone break point he faced.

Djokovic also lost his serve just once in a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 win over Marcel Granollers. He had 34 winners versus 17 unforced errors in the match.

Only two seeded men's players failed to survive Monday's play. Lukasz Kubot ousted No. 18-seeded Sam Querrey in a 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 8-6 decision that took 3 hours, 20 minutes. Florida Mayer got the other upset, taking out No. 23 Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych was a 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 winner over Marco Crugnola. Eighth-seeded Andy Roddick made the second round by beating Jan Hajek 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 and No. 9 Fernando Verdasco took a 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rainer Schuettler.

Gael Monfils, seeded 12th, rallied from two sets down to top Thiemo de Bakker 6-7 (5-7), 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. Mardy Fish, the No. 16 seed, also came back from a two-set deficit in defeating Victor Hanescu 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. No. 14 Nicholas Almagro got past Stephane Robert 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5.

Other seeded players with wins were No. 17 Ivan Ljubicic, 19th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, 25th-seeded Albert Montanes, No. 26 Juan Monaco, 28th-seeded Richard Gasquet and No. 29 Viktor Troicki.
