NHL: Colorado 5, Detroit 4

DENVER, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Matt Duchene scored twice during a four-goal, first-period outburst Monday and the Colorado Avalanche hung on for a 5-4 victory over Detroit.

Duchene's first goal broke a 1-1 tie, putting the Avs ahead for good, and his second goal less than 6 minutes later gave Colorado a 3-1 advantage.

Paul Stastny and Kevin Porter also tallied in the initial frame and David Jones added what turned out to be the game-winner with a goal off a Duchene assist early in the second period.

Jones and Tomas Fleischmann added a pair of assists each and Peter Budaj turned aside 26-of-30 shots for Colorado, which improved to 3-5-2 in its last 10 games.

The Red Wings made it a game, however, using scores by Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom to get within a goal midway through the final period.

Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard was chased after allowing four goals on 10 shots in the first period and Joey McDonald, called up from the minors earlier in the day to replace the injured Chris Osgood, stopped 15-of-16 shots the rest of the way.
