NHL: New York Rangers 2, Carolina 1 (OT)

NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Mats Zuccarello scored the first goal of his NHL career with 1:51 to go in overtime Wednesday, giving the New York Rangers a 2-1 win over Carolina.

Zuccarello was playing in his sixth game with the Rangers. He was recalled from the American Hockey League the day after Christmas.

The puck came to Zuccarello as he was behind the Carolina net. He skated in front and lifted a shot over Cam Ward.

The other New York goal came from Matt Gilroy 8:41 into the third period. Brandon Dubinsky assisted on both scores by the Rangers.

Eric Staal tied it for the Hurricanes with 6:14 left in regulation by scoring his 19th goal of the season. It was the only tally against Henrik Lundqvist, who got the win with 31 saves.

Ward stopped 33 shots.

New York had lost its previous two games. Carolina has picked up at least a point in five straight games (3-0-2).
