NHL: Tampa Bay 2, N.Y. Rangers 1 (OT)

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Nate Thompson scored 19 seconds into overtime Saturday, giving the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 decision over the New York Rangers.

The winning play came off the opening overtime face-off when Dana Tyrell skated into the deep left corner and threaded a pass past a diving defender to Thompson, who was parked in front of the net and slammed it home.

Tyrell scored in the first period and Cedrick Desjardins, playing in his second NHL game, turned aside 34 shots to earn the victory.

Marian Gaborik forced the extra frame when he scored with only 45.6 seconds left in regulation, firing a wrist shot past Desjardins after getting a pass from Dan Girardi while standing alone in the slot.

Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves for the Rangers, whose two-game winning streak was snapped.
