Riesch placed fifth at Val D'Isere with a time of 2:09.05. Austrians Nicole Hosp and Anna Fenninger placed third and fourth. American Julie Mancuso came in 15th.

Vonn said the heavy snow that fell on Friday coupled with flat lighting on Sunday had complicated the course. "It was hard to see where the snow was good and where it was a little bit bumpy," she said. "It definitely was worse for later numbers, but I made the best of it."

Vonn also said afterward she was motivated by fellow American Ted Ligety's victory in the men's giant slalom in Italy earlier Sunday. "It's a great day for the U.S. Ski Team," she said.
