Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and an assist and Varlamov made 37 saves. Washington, owner of the NHL's best record, won its fourth straight.

The only goal Varlamov allowed came from Alexander Steen with 32 seconds left in the middle period.

That cut the St. Louis deficit to 2-1 but Backstrom scored twice in the third to run his total for the season to 11 goals. The second one went into an empty net with 35 seconds to play.

Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves in the setback. The Blues have lost four in a row.
